*Trigger warning: miscarriage*

Experiencing a miscarriage can be an incredibly difficult and heartbreaking time in your life. It may leave you and your partner feeling various emotions, including sadness, anger, stress, and confusion. Loss can also result in a number of questions, such as “How will I heal from the loss of my child?” and “When should I start trying to conceive again?”

In this blog, we’re hoping to help answer these questions and provide some insights into how a loss can impact you physically and emotionally, and when it’s okay to start trying again. We’re also sharing some uplifting rainbow baby quotes that may help bring you hope during a very challenging time in your life.

Healing After a Miscarriage is Both Emotional and Physical

No matter how far along you were in your pregnancy, a loss can have significant psychological and physical effects on your body. After seeking any necessary medical treatment and/or consulting with your doctor, it is important to take care of yourself during such a difficult time.

Emotional Care

Any and all of the emotions you are feeling are valid, so try to find ways to support yourself emotionally after a miscarriage. This can be done by relying on your support system - whether that is your partner, family and friends, or even an online community. However, people may not always know the best way to provide help. To better feel supported, try telling your loved ones what it is you need. Maybe you would appreciate check-ins every few days or weeks, or the occasional get-together, if you’re up for it. Or, perhaps you would like food dropped off so you don’t have to think about making dinner.

Beyond family and friends, you may find comfort in speaking with a therapist or connecting with others in the loss community. Many therapists specialize in supporting those who have experienced a loss, so if you are interested, you might ask your doctor for a referral. Depending on your comfort level, it could also be healing to seek a support group, as it can be helpful to hear or read stories of others who have gone through something similar.

Physical Care

Everyone is different, so it’s difficult to predict how long it will take for you to physically recover and feel like yourself again. You may find it helpful to get lots of rest, use a heating pad, and stock up on ibuprofen (if needed for any pain), sanitary pads, and food and water.

Recovering from a loss looks different for every woman and your medical team is available for support you through this difficult time. If needed, they can prescribe various medications or treatments to help you during this recovery process and monitor your HCG levels to ensure that you do not need additional medical intervention. You know your body, so make sure you are monitoring for any changes or symptoms that might need medical attention, including fever, severe pain, or excessive bleeding.

When to Start Trying Again

After a loss, you may be wondering when is the best time to start trying to conceive again. Once you feel emotionally and physically ready for pregnancy after miscarriage, make sure you connect with your healthcare provider for guidance. He or she may want to ensure that you have fully recovered and then share a timeframe that is right for you (for example, this may mean waiting one full cycle following a loss). Visiting your doctor may also help identify any underlying conditions that may lead to infertility and miscarriage, such as PCOS or endometriosis. A medical professional can also recommend any treatment options that might be right for you. Ultimately, only you will know when the right time is to conceive, so listen to your body and give it a chance to rest if you need it.
