Inositol and PCOS

If you’re living with PCOS, then you’ll likely be excited to try treatments, medications and supplements that promise to help. It has so many different effects on your body, from weight gain, to unwanted hair growth to skin discolouration, before you even look at the fertility effects. What is It?

Inositol is the collective name for a number of different vitamins in the B group. It’s made in your body by your kidneys, and can be found in fruits and grains, and in animal organs (so if you’re not a vegetarian, steak and kidney pudding should go into your pregnancy diet!).

It goes into the construction of cell walls, and is also used to relay signals in your body related to insulin generation and regulation. As PCOS is caused by your body producing too much insulin, this makes anything relating to how insulin is regulated in the body potentially relevant.

What Does it Do?

By giving your body more of these key insulin controlling substances, Inositol promises to relieve the symptoms of PCOS. As your body uses insulin more effectively, you should find it easier to lose some of the excess weight PCOS brings, and with it, the other hormonal effects reduce as well. Many women have reported that it has a positive effect on hirsutism, either stopping or slowing growth of excess body hair, and skin discoloration is reported to clear up as well.

Inositol and Fertility

The big reason you’ll want to use Inositol is to improve your fertility and your chances of conceiving. As it calms and regulates insulin production in your body, that should also help your other hormones to rebalance, and help you to ovulate regularly, with higher quality eggs.

While there aren’t many large scale studies of the effects of Inositol, small scale studies and informal reports from women who’ve taken the supplement suggest it does have a positive effect in relieving the symptoms of PCOS and helping you achieve regular, spontaneous ovulation. Side effects are rarely reported, with some taking very high doses reporting nausea, headaches and difficulty sleeping.

While you should always talk to your doctor before taking a supplement like this especially if you’re trying to get pregnant, all the evidence available suggests Inositol could be a useful tool in your fertility kit!
