How to Work Out When You Ovulate

Working out when you ovulate is not always an easy task. Even if you have a regular cycle and track it by recording the dates of your period each month (which signals the beginning of your cycle), knowing when, within that span, ovulation falls isn’t necessarily obvious. Every body is different, and the best you can hope for without taking action is advice about the range of time in which you could ovulate.

Fortunately, there are ways to pin it down to a specific day – and plenty of good reasons to do so. If you know when you ovulate, then you know the best time to try to conceive! If you try in the five days before ovulation, and the day after, then sperm have a chance to survive long enough to meet the egg that’s been ovulated within it’s 24 hour lifetime. This means these are the days in which you are at your most fertile and have the best chance of getting pregnant naturally.

Not every way of working out when you ovulate is as effective for everyone, so today OvuSense is looking at some of these different methods to help you make an informed decision.

Saliva and Mucus

Two of the substances your body makes react to your upcoming ovulation in a way you can easily check – your saliva and your cervical mucus. Taking a sample of your saliva and checking to see how it dries can tell you when ovulation is coming up. If it dries in a fernlike pattern, like frost on a window, it reveals elevated salt and oestrogen levels that mean you could be ovulating!

Your cervical mucus normally forms a barrier, preventing foreign matter getting through your cervix and into your uterus. As ovulation approaches your body prepares by changing this lining, so sperm can penetrate and move through to the fallopian tubes, to potentially fertilise the egg! You’re looking for mucus about the transparency and consistency of egg white – this is known as ‘fertile mucus’ and is a sign ovulation is near.


Ovulation Predictor Kits are similar to pregnancy tests – they check for hormones in your urine. They’re quick to use and widely available, but unfortunately, they don’t always give accurate results. If you have a naturally high or low level of the Luteinising Hormone that causes your ovaries to eject an egg, the tests will either give a false positive or not register when you ovulate. If your hormones are more disrupted, due to PCOS, Hyperthyroidism or similar conditions, they’re even less useful.

Basal Body Temperature

Your Basal Body Temperature can give you an accurate way to work out when you’re ovulating, but it’s harder to access and interpret this information. To find your basal temperature, you need to take your temperature when you’re at your metabolic minimum level – during an extended rest, like a night’s sleep.
